The Manor Marussia outfit has confirmed that 2013 GP2 champion Fabio Leimer will join the squad as their official reserve driver for the 2015 Formula 1 season.
The Swiss driver competed in GP2 between 2010 and 2013, finally winning F1’s feeder series with three wins during the 22-round championship. Since then, the 26-year-old has raced in the World Endurance Championship and tested a Formula E car with Amlin Aguri.
However he will now focus on his role with Manor and will take part in “selected” free practice sessions.
“I’m thrilled to be provided with this opportunity and I’d like to thank Manor Marussia for the faith they have shown in my ability,” said Leimer.
“In particular I’m very excited to have the chance to drive the car in selected FP1s, but I am also looking forward to spending a lot of time track side with the team, contributing my observations and experience in engineering situations and also learning about the team and a Formula 1 operation.
“It’s a huge step for me and I can’t wait to get started and hopefully reward the team’s confidence in me.”
