Honda test rider Jonathan Rea outlines the Japanese marque’s focus during winter WorldSBK testing at Jerez and Portimao.

The six-time WorldSBK champion officially started his new role after announcing his retirement from full-time racing at the end of the 2025 season.

Rea’s return to Honda signalled a full-circle moment after starting his WorldSBK career with the team, aiming to take Honda back to the sharp end of the grid.

“The motorcycle has changed a lot since 2014,” said the Ulsterman to Speedweek.

“The completely new bike came out in 2020, and there have been several updates since then.”

Rea explained that his experience with rival manufacturers would be valuable and has already identified a key area where Honda must improve.

“On the positive side, after my time with Honda, I was able to gain additional experience with Kawasaki and Yamaha, and this information helps to assess the bike’s strengths and weaknesses,” said Rea.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the electronics; our main focus needs to be on finding more mechanical grip at the rear wheel.

“Honda is working hard on every aspect of the bike; I’ve rarely had so many technicians around me.

“They worked extensively on the electronics over the winter. But the purpose of the electronics isn’t to create grip; that’s primarily the bike’s job.”

But one strength outweighs the weaknesses, with the Northern Irishman explaining that the CBR1000RR-R’s engine remains an area where Honda is a force.

“When I went full throttle on the straight during my first lap, I thought to myself how nice it is to have power,” he shared.

“In fourth, fifth, and sixth gear, the bike really pulls; the engine is strong.”

Rea will take part in winter testing and as a wild card at Portimao and Donington this season.
