After winning the final flyaway race in Sepang, Alex Marquez carried his momentum into Portimao, topping the opening MotoGP practice.
The Gresini rider posted an impressive time of 1:39.145s to kick off the race weekend in the best possible way.
Marco Bezzecchi posted a lap that was quickest in every sector except the last, finishing the session second overall.
Pramac Yamaha’s Jack Miller claimed third place after impressing on his final stint, finishing as the leading rider for the Japanese marque.
Johann Zarco returned to the higher echelons with fourth place on the LCR Honda, closely followed by Tech3 KTM rider Pol Espargaro in fifth.
Franco Morbidelli ended the session sixth on the VR46 Ducati, ahead of the factory Honda duo of Luca Marini and Joan Mir, who were separated by only 0.001s.
Pedro Acosta finished in ninth as Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer closed out the top 10.
Fabio Quartararo and Fabio Di Giannantonio lapped half a tenth behind the Spaniard, as Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura finished three tenths behind.
Ducati WorldSBK rider Nicolo Bulega finished an impressive 14th in what was his first MotoGP outing, standing in for Marc Marquez.
Brad Binder finished down in 15th and a second off the pace, closely followed by Alex Rins and the second factory Ducati rider of Francesco Bagnaia.
Raul Fernandez crashed out earlier in the session but finished in 18th, lapping quicker than Enea Bastianini and Miguel Oliveira before Somkiat Chantra and Lorenzo Savadori closed out proceedings.
