Six-time WorldSBK champion Jonathan Rea took the time to reflect on his career during his farewell press conference in Jerez.
The 38-year-old’s 17-year journey in World Supersport and World Superbike comes to a close, marking the end of a career as the most successful rider in the series’ history.
He began his WorldSBK career with Ten Kate Honda before joining Kawasaki in 2015, where he won six consecutive championships and shattered virtually every record in the sport.
Rea spent his final two seasons with Yamaha, managing just one podium finish so far amid struggles with injuries and uncompetitive machinery.
“It’s been an epic journey to get here, the timing for me feels really right to close the curtain on my WorldSBK career,” Rea announced on Thursday.
“It’s been a hell of a ride, and before I go on, I want to thank my parents, brothers, sisters, my wife and my kids because they’re the backbone of my career.
“People only see the highlight reel; they don’t see the tough moments, the blood, sweat and tears to get to that point, and I’m incredibly grateful to them.
“Thank you to Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha, you’ve given me the opportunity to live my dream.”
In addition to his six WorldSBK titles, the Northern Irishman’s record of 119 wins, 264 podiums, and all-time highs in career points, races, and fastest laps places him in uncharted territory.
Emerging from a region renowned for motorcycling talent, Rea forged a remarkable career in circuit racing, leaving a lasting legacy in his homeland and across the island of Ireland.
“I grew up in Northern Ireland as a kid with pipe dreams of being a World Champion, but I’ve managed to achieve that dream, not once, but six times,” he added.
“I’m not naive enough to think that there aren’t hundreds or thousands [of] young riders with amazing talents who never get that opportunity.
“If there’s one lesson I’d give the younger generation, it’s to be ready when that opportunity faces you.
“When I got that opportunity, I grabbed it with both hands, and I was ready and won my first of many titles.”
