Home hero Jack Miller topped the opening practice session at the Australian MotoGP weekend with the final flying lap of the session.
Pramac Yamaha’s Miller began his Phillip Island round by topping the first practice by just 0.036s.
The second satellite Yamaha was embroiled in issues, as Miguel Oliveira found himself under investigation for impeding Alex Marquez of Gresini.
Joan Mir’s Honda suffered a technical problem in the dying minutes of the session, which brought out the warning flags at Turn 1 in case of any oil falling onto the track.
However, the flags did not deter Miller, who on his final run set a time of 1:28.281 to top the first practice session at his home grand prix.
Alex Marquez was second, while Pedro Acosta rounded out the top three for KTM.
Fermin Aldeguer ensured both Gresinis were inside the top four, as Fabio Quartararo completed the top five.
Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi was sixth ahead of Francesco Bagnaia, who had a promising opening session in seventh.
Johann Zarco was the top Honda rider in eighth, pipping Fabio Di Giannantonio in ninth, while Brad Binder concluded the top 10.
Raul Fernandez took the flag in 11th, edging out Mir and Luca Marini, with the Spaniard leading the factory Honda charge.
Franco Morbidelli crashed inside the opening 10 minutes of the session but finished 14th, while Enea Bastianini led Tech3 stand-in Pol Espargaro over the line in 15th.
Alex Rins was the final rider within a second of Miller’s best time in 17th, while Oliveira was 18th over the line.
Lorenzo Savadori returned to Aprilia stand-in duties in 19th ahead of Somkiat Chantra in 20th.
