BMW rider Toprak Razgatlioglu stormed to a commanding Race 1 win in WorldSBK at Estoril.
Razgatlioglu and Nicolo Bulega blitzed the competition to take first and second after a second restart.
Bulega took the holeshot into Turn 1 ahead of Razgatlioglu, but the BMW rider stormed his way through at Turn 4.
Bahattin Sofuolgu, Axel Bassani, Michael van der Mark, Tarran Mackenzie and Tetsuta Nagashima all had a coming together right at the start.
Although all riders avoided injury, the catastrophe started because Bassani lost the front, which caused a domino effect.
The race was soon red-flagged, meaning the eventual restart would be 20 laps long. The factory Ducati duo took the holeshot into Turn 1 with Alvaro Bautista leading at the end of Lap 1, closely followed by Bulega and Razgatlioglu.
The Turkish rider lunged past Bulega on Lap 2, before overtaking Bautista to regain the lead into Turn 1 on Lap 3. With Bulega closing in on his team-mate for second before making the move in sector two, the championship leader extended the gap to 0.5s.
The factory Yamaha duo of Jonathan Rea and Andrea Locatelli occupied fourth and fifth in the early phases, but neither could quite get past Bautista just yet. The Ducati had the edge down the start-finish straight, but Yamaha had an edge in over the course of the lap.
Iker Lecuona crashed out of proceedings at Turn 3 on Lap 4 on his return to the championship after his injury battles. After being caught up in the early crash, Sofuoglu’s race ended due to a technical issue.
By Lap 7, out front, Razgatlioglu formed a 1.9s advantage over Bulega as the Italian formulated a 2.3s gap over his team-mate.
After Lap 10, the gap between the lead duo remained the same, but their dominance over the field saw Bulega’s gap to his team-mate stretch to 4.7s.
Bautista made a minor mistake in Turn 1 on Lap 12, allowing Rea and Bimota rider Alex Lowes to close in on the Ducati. However, a minor mistake from Rea at the same corner on Lap 14 put the Northern Irishman on the back foot. Lowes and Locatelli both overtook the Yamaha rider on Lap 15.
But most notably, Bulega cut Razgatlioglu’s lead in half by Lap 13 as he crept closer to the BMW rider. On Lap 14, the Turkish rider’s advantage reduced to 0.6s, but he could sense the Ducati rider closing in, so he extended his lead to 1.9s on his way to victory.
Razgatlioglu’s win extended his championship advantage to 41 points after Saturday’s main race as he closed in on a third WorldSBK title.
Bulega crossed the line in second for Ducati as Razgatlioglu’s closest challenger once again.
Ducati rider Bautista rounded off the podium spots after finishing 13s behind the lead duo.
Locatelli and Lowes sealed fourth and fifth for Yamaha and Bimota, respectively, followed by Rea.
Xavi Vierge delivered seventh for Honda after qualifying in fifth place, with GoEleven’s Andrea Iannone finishing half a second behind.
Remy Gardner sealed ninth for GRT Yamaha, finishing eight seconds clear of Garrett Gerloff and the second Bimota rider of Axel Bassani.
Departing rookie Ryan Vickers finished 12th on the Ducati, as Tito Rabat, Tarran Mackenize and Michael van der Mark sealed the final points scoring positions.
