BMW M Motorsport has announced current Haas Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen will join their LMDh programme for the 2025 sportscar season.
The Bavarian automotive manufacturer has brought on the Dane who is competing in his final F1 race for Haas this weekend in Abu Dhabi.
He will drive in the IMSA 24 Hours of Daytona on 25-26 January 2025 with the rest of his schedule announced in due course.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing currently run the pair of BMW’s in the IMSA SportsCar Championship and their GTP category, whilst WRT run two BMWs in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar class.
Magnussen said: “I am happy and proud to represent such an iconic motorsport brand as BMW in some of the world’s most legendary races.
“After ten years in Formula 1, I am embarking on a new and exciting chapter, and I look forward to taking on the challenge in the most innovative and advanced sports cars in the history of endurance racing.
“A huge thank you to BMW M Motorsport for this fantastic opportunity.
“I can hardly wait to start the preparations and look forward to kicking off the 2025 season with the rest of the team.”
A wealth of F1 experience
Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, added: “Kevin Magnussen is an outstanding addition to our LMDh programme.
“He has regularly demonstrated his speed at the highest level in Formula 1 over the past decade.
“Thanks to his extensive experience, he is a true asset to our project.
“His previous full season with a sports car prototype in 2021 is another advantage for us, as it will surely ease his acclimatisation to the BMW M Hybrid V8.
“I am very delighted that Kevin Magnussen is part of the BMW M Motorsport family now.”
After making his F1 comeback in 2022 with Haas, Magnussen will commit to the project surrounding the BMW M Hybrid V8.
On his F1 debut in 2014, he secured his only podium finish to-date with second position at the Australian Grand Prix.
He temporarily departed Formula 1 at the end of 2020 and committed to his first sportscar racing season in 2021.
During his IMSA campaign, Magnussen took one race victory and five podium finishes with the Chip Ganassi Cadillac DPi team.
He also participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with High Class Racing in the LMP2 category, although reliability problems halted progress during the race.
Magnussen, regardless, continued building his F1 experience so that he will have competed in 185 races.
Whilst his specific racing schedule is unconfirmed for now, he will return to sportscars in a vastly different setting amidst several competing Hypercar manufacturers.
