Trackhouse Racing’s Raul Fernandez has ruled out downgrading to a Moto2 ride next season, citing that remaining in the premier MotoGP class is his single ambition.
The 2021 Moto2 runner-up has struggled across his two-season period in MotoGP to date, winding up in 22nd and 20th place in the standings in previous campaigns.
However, the current season has seen a vast improvement as Fernandez has scored points in the last five grands prix to be situated 12th in the Riders’ Championship.
Fernandez’s most notable outing came in the Catalan Grand Prix when he led the Sprint and then secured sixth place in the main event from third position on the grid.
With seats being covered for 2025 up and down the paddock, Fernandez has expressed that he is hoping to remain with the Trackhouse Aprilia team in the top flight.
“I know what I want to do, I know I want to stay,” Fernandez told Motorsport.com.
“I think it’s not the moment to speak about that. I think we have to wait two or three races more, but I can say that everything is on the good way.”
Questioned on whether he’d consider a return to Moto2 in the scenario that was possible, he replied: “No. I think not. We have some priorities before [considering this].”
Despite his age indicating that a term back in Moto2 could be an avenue, history has shown that few riders recover from a demotion to MotoGP’s intermediate class.
The most successful rider who completed such a route in their career was Aleix Espargaro, who was in Moto2 from 2010 to 2012 and attained three wins with Aprilia.
