BMW’s Eng tops second practice in IMSA Laguna Seca

#24: BMW M Team RLL, BMW M Hybrid V8, GTP: Jesse Krohn, Philipp Eng

BMW #24’s Philipp Eng set a blistering lap time of 1:13.349 to go fastest at Laguna Seca.

After a heavily disrupted first practice session for the entire field, second practice would be vital to get acclimatised to the new track surface, which has laid down a lot of fresh grip. BMW’s Philipp Eng fired in a lap time in the low 1:13.000’s, already beating the top time from the first practice. The sister BMW #25 would join Eng inside the top three, Nick Yelloly and Connor De Phillippi running just a few tenths down on BMW’s overall best time in GTP.

Sebastien Bourdais in the #01 Cadillac also developed well, setting over 50 laps around Laguna Seca, and just a few tenths from the top time, the Cadillac team making use of the final practice session after not being able to do much running yesterday.

The #7 and #6 Porsche’s would round out the top five in the GTP class, with Dane Cameron and Felipe Nasr in the #7 Porsche just a few tenths down on the top three, also making use of FP2, the pair of Porsche’s setting close to 50 laps each.

Jack Aitken and the #31 Whelen Cadillac crew ended up in sixth, making good progress after Aitken’s big crash at Turn four yesterday, which brought out an extended red flag period and reduced running. The #31 Cadillac managed a lap time just shy of the 1:13.000’s.

In the GTD class, the Lexus #14 of Ben Barnicoat set a blistering lap time of 1:20.376, the track beginning to evolve and the grip beginning to settle for the GTD cars, meaning faster lap times and also more mistakes. The Inception McLaren would go off at turn six, as would the #55 Ford Mustang. Further problems in the GTD class for the #34 Ferrari AF Corse, who had a rear suspension collapse.

Corvette #4 would end the session in second place for the GTD class, followed by the #9 McLaren and #45 Lamborghini. The top five would be rounded off with the #77 Porsche, the three cars ahead all within one single tenth of one another. The #3 Corvette driven by Alexander Sims would end the session sixth, a further tenth behind.

The IMSA action continues in Qualifying at 12:35am UK time.
