Alex Marquez topped the times in the opening practice session for this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Gresini Ducati team-mate and brother Marc Marquez.
The pair swapped places across the closing stages of the session, but it was Alex who posted a 1:36.630s to go five-tenths clear, with Maverick Vinales in third place.
Americas Grand Prix winner Vinales continued his recent momentum to wind up under a tenth behind Marc Marquez, with Aprilia team-mate Aleix Espargaro fourth.
Despite ending up almost a second adrift of the pacesetting time in first practice, Pramac’s Franco Morbelli slotted into fifth, ahead of VR46 Ducati’s Marco Bezzecchi.
The three-time champion and KTM wildcard for this round Dani Pedrosa finished as the lead KTM in seventh, with full-time rider Brad Binder classified one place back.
Meanwhile, fellow factory KTM rider Jack Miller’s struggles continued as he had to settle for 16th, with current championship leader Jorge Martin languishing in ninth.
Rookie sensation Pedro Acosta is riding the crest of a wave with two podiums from the opening three races and he completed the top 10 runners on the GasGas KTM.
Fabio Di Giannantonio was situated outside, along with the Ducati duo of Francesco Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini who came next, alongside Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo.
However, Yamaha team-mate Alex Rins came in three places further back in 17th, with Miguel Oliveira and Miller splitting the Japanese marque’s respective entrants.
Johann Zarco was in the middle of a Raul Fernandez and Augusto Fernandez sandwich, even though he lost the front at the fast Turn 8 midway through the session.
Despite this, he still finished as the lead Honda rider ahead of team-mate Takaaki Nakagami and factory Honda rider Joan Mir.
Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori and Honda test rider Stefan Bradl occupied the following two places, with full-time Honda rider Luca Marini finishing dead last.
