Isotta Fraschini driver Jean-Karl Vernay told media that the revived Italian manufacturer has a great deal of motivation and determination to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

“We have a lot of determination, a lot of motivation. Even if you are a still a small manufacturer and small team, we are extremely motivated to make something,” he said at the pre-race press conference before this weekend’s race, the 6 Hours of Imola.

Isotta Fraschini made their WEC debut, and return to motorsport for the first time since the 1920s, at the first round of this year’s championship, the Qatar 1812km. While they didn’t finish owing to a suspension problem, the team was happy with its performance and the data collected after five hours of running.

Going forwards, the team are keen to move up the field, as can be expected. But they know this will be tough, as Vernay relayed.

“Definitely super happy to be a part of all these guys in this championship. We are working hard, trying to be really competitive. The level is extremely high, we’re fighting against big companies and top drivers, and we know it’s not going to be easy.”

Turning to look at this weekend’s race, the 6 Hours of Imola, Vernay agreed with what many drivers have said already this weekend: that it’s going to be a challenge.

“The track is super demanding but also super cool to drive. Traffic management is not easy, but it’s going to be the same for everybody. And right now looking quite okay, the pace of the guys is not bad. It’s better than Qatar, that was a good first session. A lot of work, but we’re looking good.

“And now we need to continue working with my teammates on all points, to be ready for the race,” he finished.

Isotta Fraschini finished the first free practice session in 11th, with Vernay setting the team’s best lap, a 1:33.060, 1.7 seconds off the ultimate pace. However, as the pace ramped up in FP2, they found themselves 3.119 seconds off, with Vernay again setting the car’s fastest lap.

The 6 Hours of Imola starts at 1pm local time on Sunday 21st April, with qualifying taking place today, Saturday 20th April, starting at 2:45pm.
