The city of Long Beach, California has approved a five-year extension to the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, providing a way for the historic event to stay on the calendar through 2028.

The combined IndyCar and IMSA event has been held almost every year since 1975, with Formula 1 providing the entertainment in the early years through 1983.

The previous agreement between the city and the event expired in 2023, and the new approval from the city council extends the expiration date out five more years.

The event’s CEO and President Jim Michaelian said in a statement, “The Grand Prix has always been a very strong community event, and this agreement just amplifies the unique relationship with the City of Long Beach going forward.”

Other items approved include a minor reduction in setup and tear-down times and street surface improvements over the next couple years, both of which will help quality of life for residents of Long Beach.

Also approved was a deferment of over $94,000 in permit fees from the canceled 2020 race, allowing the organization to pay the city over the course of the next five years with no penalty.

The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is scheduled to return to its traditional place near the start of the schedule this season, with the race planned as the third race on the IndyCar calendar on the weekend of April 10.
