Teemu Suninen has said he will require a ‘reset’ after another difficult event for M-Sport Ford driving the Ford Fiesta WRC in Sardinia.
Returning to the top tier for the first time since Arctic Rally Finland and on the back of two second place finishes in WRC2, Suninen’s weekend was ruined on SS1 as he went wide on a right hander and put his Fiesta on its side. The car was righted onto four wheels, but unfortunately the car was beached on a bank and he would go no further.
It was a complete contrast to the event last year where Suninen recorded an opening stage time twelve seconds quicker than anyone else and recorded his best ever WRC finish with second place. It was also the second time this season that Suninen had cost himself any chance of a good result on SS1 of a rally, having rolled out of the opening stage in Monte Carlo.
“I need to do a bit of a reset after Sardinia,” he said. “Rallying can be tough sometimes and it was tough on that event. I need to find the better feeling and make a better drive again.”
Suninen will miss the next round of the championship as he again hands over the Fiesta to Adrien Fourmaux for Safari Rally Kenya, but he hopes to be back behind the wheel for his adopted home event of Estonia in July.
“It looks like this could be the next one for me. I really like this event. Let’s see what I can do on this one.”
