Only a single LMP2 car has been entered into the Hyundai Monterey Sports Car Championship event at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, the penultimate round of the 2020 IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship season.

IMSA has released the entry list for the California round, which features only the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports ORECA 07-Gibson for Patrick Kelly and Simon Trummer.

The team returns to the championship for the first time since missing out on victory at Motul Petit Le Mans, when mechanical troubles struck in the final hour of the race.

The sole entry into the class marks the first time in championship history that any category has attracted a single entrant. It comes as the result of several factors that have slowly seen the class throughout the year.

Performance Tech Motorsports and Tower Motorsport by Starworks have opted to skip the race and only compete in the season finale at Sebring, largely down due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dragonspeed, which competed in the class earlier in the season, abandoned its 2020 IMSA campaign in favor of a two-car entry into the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Finally, Era Motorsport saw its campaign end prematurely when Dwight Merriman suffered a back injury from a crash in practice at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The rest of the 28-car entry list has remained mostly unchanged. Matheus Leist and Stephen Simpson have been paired up aboard the #85 JDC-Miller Motorsports Cadillac DPi-VR, while Alessandro Balzan returns to partner Cooper MacNeil aboard the #63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo in place of Toni Vilander.
