BMW i Andretti Motorsport believes that Formula E will see a greater number of energy-limited races in Season 6.
For the 2019/20 season – which will commence later this week – Formula E has introduced a raft of new rules and regulations in a bid to make the championship more competitive.
Among these changes comes the implementation of an energy subtraction, with the equivalent of 1kWh of energy getting subtracted per minute during Full Course Yellow and Safety Car periods, with this making energy management impossible during caution windows.
The introduction of this rule comes to the championship after a number of late Safety Car periods in Season 5 removed the need for energy management, with this leading to flat-out racing until the chequered flag.
BMW i Andretti Motorsport Team Principal Roger Griffiths believes this new rule change will lead to a higher quantity of energy-limited races this season:
"As the team heads back to the venue of its debut win in Season 5, and following a successful Valencia pre-season test, there is obviously some excitement ahead of the race weekend in Diriyah," he said.
"However, we know that all of our competitors have been working hard and therefore we don’t underestimate the challenge ahead of us. Both Alexander [Sims] and Maximilian [Gunther] have been very focused on their preparations for the first races of the season.
"With the new sporting regulations impacting how the energy is used during a race incident, we should see a move back to more energy limited racing. This should showcase the efficiencies of the BMW drivetrain.
"The double-header format of the opening event always makes it slightly more challenging, but it is a very experienced crew at BMW i Andretti Motorsport that is well prepared for this challenge."
The first races of Season 6 will take place on November 22 and 23, with a record number of drivers and teams set to contest the 2019/20 campaign.
