MotoGP organisers Dorna Sports have announced a preliminary agreement to return to Hungary at a new circuit for 2022.

The premier motorcycle racing series last visited the country in 1992 as part of the 500cc era at the Hungaroring, with the new venue set to be constructed in the east of Hungary.

Dorna have come to a Memorandum of Understanding – effectively a preliminary agreement – to hold five grands prix covering the ’22 through to the ’26 campaigns, with the final decision on the circuit and location of the event expected early next year.

"I am very proud to be able to announce negotiations for another addition to the future MotoGP calendar and continue to see our sport grow and develop across the world,” said Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.

“A new race – and circuit – in Hungary is an exciting prospect for us all and brings MotoGP back to a country with a great tradition in racing in which we're excited to see MotoGP play a key role going forward."

Laszlo Palkovics, Hungarian Minister for Innovation and Technology, added: "I am very happy to announce MotoGP is set to return to Hungary. Soon, a strategy for the development of Hungarian motorsports will be submitted to the government; this strategy will include numerous objectives and measures, and – in addition to success in the sport and its impact on tourism.

“It is also needed because the industry has a dominant impact on the success of the Hungarian economy.

“The key areas of intervention are the development of Hungaroring and the domestic sports infrastructure, in which a new circuit and MotoGP event will play a key role.”

As of the ’19 season no Hungarian riders currently compete at grand prix level, with the last major sportsman from the region being 2007 125cc world champion Gabor Talmacsi.

Peter Sebestyen – who currently competes on a Honda in the Supersport World Championship – is in arguably the best position to make the move to the grand prix paddock, the 25 year-old having managed 11th in this year’s series with a best result of eighth at Phillip Island.
