Aeroscreen will allow drivers to prolong their careers – Will Power

The new aeroscreen could allow drivers to prolong their careers thanks to the increased feeling of safety according to Team Penske's Will Power.

Power, along with five-time IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon, conducted the first of four tests with the safety device at the world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Both drivers were pleased with the progress made with the aeroscreen which has been co-developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies.

With the extra safety the screen is set to provide the drivers, Power believes drivers could extend their racing careers.

"I do think it would prolong a career, make you feel a little safer for sure, yeah, a lot safer," said the Australian.

"I can remember a couple of times in the last five years on a superspeedway, there had been a big crash — actually Scott's [2017 crash] was one of them, and I actually went like that with my arm, not that that's going to stop anything, it's going to kill you.

"But that's how much stuff you see flying towards your head and how lucky you really get to get through all that stuff. Any time you're on a superspeedway and there's a big crash, it's just luck really to me.

"It's just a matter of time until someone got caught again. So yes, having a family and all that, you probably won't think about retiring quite so soon."

Penske team-mate Simon Pagenaud took to the Barber Motorsports Circuit on Monday with Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay.

There were fears the aeroscreen could prove to be an issue during wet weather conditions, however, the Frenchmen allayed those fears after rain hit the Alabama circuit during the second test.

"Honestly felt great in the wet!" he said on social media. "Visibility might even be better than it would with the helmet alone as water seemed to disperse better on the aeroscreen!"
