BWT Arden has announced that Artem Markelov will join the team for the final two rounds of the FIA Formula 2 championship.

Markelov will partner Tatiana Calderon for the final four races of the season in his native Russia and Abu Dhabi.

The Russian driver joined the series formerly known as GP2 in 2014 and has since contested five full seasons of competition until the end of 2018.

During his stay, he has notched up nine victories as well as another eight podium appearances. His best season came in 2017 as he finished second in the championship to Charles Leclerc.

His latest appearance came in the 2019 round in Monaco as he filled in for Jordan King at MP Motorsport as the British driver competed at the Indianapolis 500.

Markelov will run with #22 as the number #19 has been retired for the rest of the season as a mark of respect for Anthoine Hubert, whose place at the team he is taking.

Kenny Kirwan BWT Arden Team Manager said: “Following on from recent tragic events and our return to Sochi as a two-car team, we are proud and humbled to have Artem join us for the remaining races of the season.

"Artem is a proven race winner in this category and we very much relish the opportunity to work together and to continue where we left off with Anthoine, who we miss very dearly.”

Markelov added: “First of all, I want to give my best to the family of Anthoine.

“This guy was not only a good driver, but he was also a great man who was happy all the time and always gave us a smile. He showed everyone his talent.

“Thanks to the team for trusting me in this situation and I’m going to do my best for them. We are going to drive together in memory of Anthoine.

“I’m really happy I’ll be driving for BWT Arden for the rest of the championship.

“It’s a really nice opportunity to drive at my home Grand Prix again. I hope for a strong result and I’ll work hard to achieve it.”

Sauber Junior Team by Charouz has already announced Matevos Isaakyan as a replacement for Juan Manuel Correa, who remains hospitalised in London, while Ralph Boschung will return to Trident after missing the most recent round at Monza.
