Christian Horner: Monza qualifying a ‘complete clusterf**k’

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has said "everybody looked like idiots" during the closing stages of qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix, whilst Red Bull team boss Christian Horner described it as a "clusterf**k".

The bizarre session saw drivers faking lock-ups to take penalty routes and therefore drop back, whilst others drove slowly in an effort to force rivals to overtake them in order to receive a tow down Monza's long straights.

Such is the benefit of the tow, no driver wanted to go out first and once one driver left the pits, the remaining cars swiftly followed suit, with the last minutes of Q3 looking like a race start as nine cars were so closely bunched up.

It resulted in all but McLaren's Carlos Sainz, who found himself at the head of the pack, running out of time and therefore failing to set a second timed lap, meaning Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who held provisional pole, went on to claim the top spot.

"Have you ever seen anything like that?" questioned Wolff. "That was not even worthy of a junior formula.

"The problem is that everyone is trying to get the slipstream and it's a nerve game of who exits first and then some who exit first think to reduce their speed even more."

He picked fault with Renault's Nico Hulkenberg, who took to the run-off to let others past, as the main culprit.

"Going through the chicane outside of the track is just junior class and then everybody just looked like idiots," he added. "Hulkenberg going through the chicane then other cars reducing their speed. Not worthy of Formula 1."

The last lap is under investigation and Horner believes the order will change: "The Renault that went straight on caused all the issues because nobody wants to be at the front of the queue. He obviously did that on purpose. It ends up as a complete clusterf**k scenario.

"The clerk of the course is going to have an issue with that, for sure. It was all just a bit silly."
