Dani Sordo says he’ll rent a car if Hyundai don’t pick him for Spain

Spanish Hyundai star Dani Sordo has claimed he will rent a rally car for Rally Catalunya, if he is not selected for the works team on his home event.

He took a surprising victory in Sardinia earlier in the year – just his second ever WRC career victory – his first win in almost six years. But the fact that he will be up against the defending winner in Spain – nine-times WRC champion Seb Loeb – means Sordo is cautious of his chances.

"I would really like to do Spain,” the Spaniard said. “If I don't do it with this car then I will rent a car! I will be really sad if I don't do Spain [with Hyundai]."

He has finished as runner-up four times in Spain. Earlier this season Hyundai dropped Andreas Mikkelsen for the asphalt Tour of Corsica and also Portugal so it could give a drive to Loeb and Sordo alongside Thierry Neuville. But Mikkelsen's improved form could mean his drive is safe for Catalunya.

Sordo drives in the main factory Hyundai team in place of Loeb on the next two WRC events, Rallye Deutschland and Rally Turkey.

Sordo also faces another obstacle in the form of Craig Breen. The Irishman is an additional complication for the Hyundai team as a whole after he impressed in a one-off drive in Finland, which has brought unconfirmed reports that he could well compete on more than one event before the season’s end and is now expected to make an appearance on Rally GB in October for the team.
