Alexander Albon: Toro Rosso renewal, not Red Bull seat, the aim

Alexander Albon says his main focus is on retaining his Toro Rosso seat, rather than allowing any thoughts of being able to step up to Red Bull for 2020.

Albon made his Formula 1 debut with Toro Rosso this season, having been extricated from a Nissan Formula E deal, as a replacement for Brendon Hartley.

Hartley’s 2018 team-mate Pierre Gasly was promoted to Red Bull in place of Renault-bound Daniel Ricciardo, but has so far endured a difficult campaign, prompting suggestions he could be replaced for 2020.

Toro Rosso pair Albon and Daniil Kvyat are ostensibly favourites, should Red Bull not renew Gasly for 2020, but the Anglo-Thai driver played down such prospects.

“To be honest, I’m not thinking about that kind of thing,” said Albon on a Red Bull seat.

“I’m more thinking about securing the Toro Rosso seat first. That’s kind of the focus, just focusing on the job right now.”

Toro Rosso moved to fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship in Germany in the wake of Kvyat’s shock podium and Albon’s sixth position.

“I think we’ll need to do a couple more rain dances to get a podium,” joked Albon.

“I think we’re running fifth in the constructors. We know it won’t be easy to stay there.

“Obviously the way it works in Formula One, to get as many points as we did last weekend was a huge boost for the team, so it will just be about trying to stay there, keep the points up and we’ll see.”
