Tech 3 KTM’s Hafizh Syahrin will compete as a wildcard in the Malaysian round of the World Touring Car Cup at Sepang later this year, in a Volkswagen Golf TCR.
Syahrin will compete for the German Engstler Motorsport outfit in the three-race WTCR event alongside fellow Malaysian racer Mitchell Cheah in a pair of Golf TCR’s.
He will also contest the eight-hour motorcycle race that will run on the bill alongside WTCR that weekend as part of the Endurance World Championship, for an as yet unannounced team and bike.
The MotoGP rider is on the lookout for a new programme for next year after it was announced he would be replaced at the French Tech 3 squad by Ajo Moto2’s Brad Binder, a return to the intermediate class thought to be Syahrin’s most likely destination should he fail to secure one of the few remaining seats in MotoGP.
He currently sits just 25th in the MotoGP riders standings-having notched up just three points- in what has been a tough year for the 25 year-old, a 14th at the French GP at Le Mans being his best result so far in his sophomore premier class campaign.
Francois Ribeiro, head of the Eurosport Events outlet that promotes both the WTCR and EWC, is thrilled to have secured Syahrin for the November double-header.
“Hafizh Syahrin is a household name in Malaysia and we’re delighted he won’t just be competing at Races of Malaysia, but truly embracing the double-header concept by taking part in both the 8 Hours of Sepang and the three races that make up WTCR Race of Malaysia.”
