Alexander Sims hails ‘fantastic’ maiden podium after mixed debut season

Alexander Sims has hailed his maiden Formula E podium as "fantastic" following an up and down debut season in the all-electric single-seater series.

Sims joined BMW i Andretti Motorsport for Formula E's fifth season of competition and had consistently fast pace over the course of the 2018/19 campaign, however, did not have the results to match following a spate of bad luck.

In New York, Sims converted this pace into a series of strong results, claiming fourth place in the first race of the weekend before storming to pole position in qualifying for the season finale.

Sims led most of the second race of the weekend in New York after securing a strong start from pole, however, was overtaken by Envision Virgin Racing's Robin Frijns for the lead with 21-minutes + 1 lap of racing remaining, taking the chequered flag in second.

Reflecting on his second place which also marked his first Formula E podium, Sims hailed the result as "fantastic," happy to head into the summer break on a high note:

"It feels fantastic to be on the podium as I had just missed out a few times in the past," said Sims.

"Of course, I would have liked to have won from pole position. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with the overall result. Finishing fourth and second at the finale is a great effort.

"I have learned so much this season and there were plenty of ups and downs. Bearing that in mind, I am very happy that we are heading for the summer break after a race like this."

On the second side of the BMW garage, Antonio Felix da Costa experienced a difficult final race of the season, finishing in a low-key ninth place:

“It really wasn't easy to make up ground from the middle of the pack," said the Portuguese racer. "We managed to reach ninth place though.

"Just like Race 1, both drivers scored some points for the team. It's a shame that we don’t have a third race as we did very well here in New York.

"I have finished the season in sixth place in the Drivers’ Standings. We were in the leading group for the whole season and winning the first race remains the highlight of course. I think we have had a good season overall."
