Guanyu Zhou storms to maiden F2 pole at Silverstone

UNI Virtuosi's Guanyu Zhou stormed to his maiden FIA Formula 2 pole position at Silverstone ahead of Saturday's Feature Race, leading a front-row lockout for the team.

Zhou was towards the front of the pack through both practice and qualifying and he claimed the four points on offer for pole position by beating team-mate Luca Ghiotto by over two-tenths of a second.

DAMS secured the second row of the grid with Sergio Sette Camara edging out Nicholas Latifi; both cars initially looked to have the pace early on in the session, but the UNI-Virtuosi cars soon put an end to that.

Carlin's Louis Deletraz will line up fifth after putting in a good final run to move him up the order, recovering well after an unfortunate clash in practice with the Prema of Sean Gelael.

Sauber Junior Team by Charouz driver Callum Ilott will head up the third row in sixth, ahead of championship leader Nyck De Vries, who was a subdued seventh for ART Grand Prix.

Campos Racing's Jack Aitken will start from eighth ahead of the second Carlin of Nobuharu Matsushita and BWT Arden's Anthoine Hubert.

The session's only interruption came from Trident's Giuliano Alesi, who spun the car around in Maggotts-Becketts complex.

Saturday's 29-lap Feature Race will get underway at 15:45 local time.
