Jean-Eric Vergne treating Formula E Season 5 finale ‘like any other round’

Jean-Eric Vergne is treating this weekend's ABB FIA Formula E Championship 2018/19 finale the same as all other races over the course of Season 5.

Heading into the double-header New York City E-Prix, Vergne holds a 32 point lead over Lucas di Grassi in the Drivers' Championship and is on the verge of making history by becoming Formula E's first two-time champion.

With 58 points still available this season, Vergne's present lead is by no means secure and if di Grassi is able to close the gap to the Frenchman to 29 points by the end of Race 1, the title fight will roll over to the final race of the season.

At present, Vergne is in fine form, winning last month's Swiss E-Prix to not only record his third consecutive podium finish but also his third win of the season after previously triumphing in Sanya and Monaco.

For New York, Vergne has said that he will approach the race in the Big Apple with the same attitude and mentality, treating it like any other race in the all-electric single-seater series:

"The season has flown by and we’re already back in NYC to finish another season," said the Frenchman. "It’s been a great year for the whole team with the backing of a manufacturer on board and we’ve taken another step forward.

"On my side, there’s obviously the potential of another championship and the opportunity for the team to clinch the title we so nearly got last year.

"I wouldn’t say that we do anything differently for a season finale, we do our normal preparations and treat it like any other round because in the end of the day, that is what it is, and the points matter just the same."

In the Teams' Championship, DS Techeetah finds itself locked in a four-way battle against Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler, Envision Virgin Racing and Nissan e.dams, with all four outfits still having a mathematical chance of taking the title with 97 points available.

The New York City E-Prix will take place on July 13 and 14 where an eight-way showdown for the Drivers' Championship will take place against the backdrop of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan.
