Oliver Jarvis delivered Mazda Team Joest with pole position for the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, beating Dane Cameron to the top spot in qualifying.
In the early stages of the 15-minute session, it was Cameron in the #6 Acura Team Penske car who set the pace, the 30-year-old Californian holding a two-second advantage over the rest of the field.
With Acura Team Penske looking strong, a pacy lap from Harry Tincknell in the #55 Mazda proved that both teams were operating on similar levels of performance at the 3.4-mile circuit while both held a clear advantage over Cadilac.
When Cameron dipped below the 1m 30s mark, it appeared that the Acura Team Penske driver was the only candidate for pole position, seeming to have a pace advantage over the rest of the field before Jarvis proved otherwise, taking provisional pole position with 7-minutes of the session remaining.
Completing a 1m 29.787s lap, Jarvis again improved just before the chequered flag waved, beating his previous personal best by 0.148s to claim pole position while Cameron ended the session as second-best, 0.223s off the pace.
In the #7 Acura Team Penske car, Ricky Taylor qualified in third, a further 0.066s adrift of the sister #6 car while Tincknell was fourth in the #55 Mazda.
Despite facing a drive-through penalty at the start of the session after a pit lane violation, Renger Van Der Zande completed the top five in the #10 Konica Minolta Cadilac.
The fight for pole position in GTLM was a closely contested affair between Ford and Corvette, with BMW and Porsche failing to challenge the two American marques at the sharp-end of the classification.
Completing a 1m 40.799s run, it was Antonio Garcia who came out on top in the #3 Corvette while Richard Westbrook was second-fastest in the #67 Ford GT with Tommy Milner completing the top three in the second Corvette.
Meyer Shank Racing took a dominant 1-2 in GTD qualifying, with Trent Hindman delivering the #86 Acura crew with pole position while Christina Nielsen was second-fastest in the #57, with Dillon Machavern qualifying in third in the #96 Turner Motorsports BMW M6 GT3.
