Valtteri Bottas prefers tracks that penalise errors despite heavy crash

Valtteri Bottas says he prefers Formula 1 circuits that penalise mistakes, in the wake of his hefty crash during practice for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Bottas suffered a snap of oversteer through Turn 6 and skated across the gravel before he suffered a heavy front-on impact with the barriers on the outside of the corner.

Bottas was uninjured in the accident, which measured 25G, but it brought his day to a premature end.

"Even though I crashed, I do prefer to be penalised for the mistakes," he said.

"It makes it more exciting. I think that is how it should be and definitely mistakes here cost a lot with aggressive kerbs and minimal runs-off and everything."

Bottas’ day was also compromised by an engine issue that was detected prior to the first practice session.

It meant he competed in FP1 using the Spec 1 engine, while the old leak on his Spec 2 unit was understood and addressed prior to FP2.

"This morning we had a bit of an issue with the engine, so we had to swap back to the old one for first practice, so that compromised first practice a little bit," he said.

"But we still found a clear direction on the car set up and where to go, and made pretty big changes for FP2 and felt a lot better until I had the shunt.

"But before that it was feeling quite nice. So, overall, a good feeling, but other teams are quick as well."
