Corvette to use backup chassis at Watkins Glen after Le Mans crash

Corvette Racing will be using a backup chassis at this weekend's Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen.

After Marcel Fassler was involved in a significant crash at in the opening stages of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the car was found to be too severely damaged to compete at Watkins Glen. The crash occurred when Fassler attempted to pass the #88 Dempsey-Proton GTE Am Porsche of Satoshi Hoshino, only for the two to make contact, sending the Corvette into the barrier hard.

As it turns out, the car Fassler crashed was chassis number 6. This is the same car in which Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner race in the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship.

Since chassis 6 proved significantly damaged after the crash, the duo will now drive chassis number 4. This was last used when Corvette Racing competed in the 1000 Miles of Sebring.

The chassis was actually used as a show car at Le Mans before the team brought it to the pits after the race and put the engine and gearbox from the damaged car in to prepare it for duty at Watkins Glen.

Chassis 4 actually was a very successful car for Milner and Gavin, as it was the car they used to achieve class wins at Daytona and Sebring in 2016 before going on to claim the championship in GTLM. The pair's 2019 season has been less stellar, with a single podium finish leaving them seventh in class.
