Marco Sorensen: ‘Long journey’ towards GTE Pro pole for Aston Martin

Marco Sorensen took GTE Pro pole position in the #95 Aston Martin Vantage AMR ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The top spot in qualifying is a far cry from Aston Martin Racing's performance twelve months ago, when the pair of Vantage AMRs where nowhere near pole position. Speaking to Motorsport Week, Sorensen admits this qualifying success has been a long time coming.

"Yeah, obviously, it’s been a long journey," Sorensen said. "Last year, we already knew that it was gonna be a very, very long weekend, with no chance to be in the fight for anything. We went away from here a little bit shocked, but the whole team have got together, and we’ve found a way to work through."

Sorensen highlights the improvements his team has made throughout the year, and how those have helped to build momentum.

"And later in the season, we got a win in Shanghai, in the wet though. Then we went to Sebring and we had better pace in the dry, which was optimistic. We didn’t get the result there that we wanted, but we still had good pace. And then the 97 car won an extremely difficult race in Spa. So I think we’ve just been building momentum throughout this way too long season. We’re out here now, and everyone is very optimistic."

Despite the victories in Shanghai and Spa-Francorchamps taking place under less than ideal conditions, the Dane believes Aston Martin's stronger package allows him to fight up front.

"For sure, we’ve got a new updated aero kit and that helps, but on the other hand, the pace we showed in Sebring was really positive."

"So even though it’s only been wet races wins so far, that doesn’t mean we can’t go ahead and win a dry race here at Le Mans. Because we had a good pace in Sebring, and I think if we can just do the same, we should be in it, at least."
