Championship leader heading into Rally Chile, Thierry Neuville, has been forced to retire from the event following a huge crash during the Maria Las Cruces test.

The Hyundai driver had been chasing down second-placed Sebastian Ogier with just 1.4 seconds splitting the duo ahead of SS8, but drifted wide and rolled his i20 eight times before eventually coming to a rest.

Neuville required medical assistance after the crash and was transferred to Concepcion Hospital for further checks.

A later update from his Hyundai team confirmed he escaped injury. Co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul is also believed to be fine.
