Only ‘subtle’ upgrades for Red Bull in Spain – Christian Horner

The Spanish Grand Prix marks the start of the European leg of the season and tradtionally sees teams introduce huge upgrade packages as they seek to out-develop their rivals, but Red Bull won't be following the usual pattern according to team boss Christian Horner.

Red Bull, which sits third in the standings behind Ferrari and Mercedes, will only be bringing a "subtle" upgrade to Barcelona this weekend as it looks to build on its strong start to the season, which has seen Max Verstappen match the Ferraris, sitting just one point adrift of Sebastian Vettel and four ahead of Charles Leclerc.

"It’s fairly subtle," Horner said of their Spain package. "It’s basically evolutions so it’ll be the usual; front and rear wing upgrades. But it’s evolution rather than revolution.

"I think all your development is focused on different aspects of balance, degradation, all of those things. We have very good tyre duration here, we struggled a little bit on warm up. It’s always about finding that trade."

Despite a strong start to 2019, Horner says the team are looking forward to returning to European tracks, which are more suited to their car.

"I think we closed the gap since the beginning of the year," he added. "In Melbourne we had a strong race, I think Max was pushing Lewis [Hamilton] for the majority of that Grand Prix, Bahrain was a tough race for us but I think actually exposed some things that we’ve managed to improve since then.

"Then China has been a stronger race, and then again [in Baku] even more so – a track that, you know doesn’t historically play to our strengths – so I think we’re looking forward to heading back to Europe now. A few circuits coming up that hopefully should suit us."
