Aston Martin Racing’s Paul Dalla Lana gave a damning verdict on his chances of adding a fifth consecutive win to his tally at this weekend’s TOTAL Six Hours of Spa Francorchamps.
The Canadian, who is driving the #98 Aston Martin Vantage GTE in LMGTE Am together with Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda, thinks the Porsches are too quick to challenge and believes a podium finish could even be a struggle.
“They’re surely the fastest car right now, there’s no doubt,” said Dalla Lana. “And it’s been that way since the beginning of last year, so it’s a source of some frustration, I’ve gotta say. But in any event, that’s racing. We know we’re a good half to three quarters of a second down on them on a normal lap. That means you really have to just execute flawlessly. And we haven’t done that.
“I think in a normal year, I think you’d be on [it] right now because we’d always think that we should challenge for the pole and the win, but this year I really feel like we’re at a bit of a disadvantage right now, so it’s gonna take a little bit of luck this time around. We’re definitely not the fastest car.
“Just to get on the podium now is hard for us. I think before we always felt that for sure we were gonna be on the podium. We don’t have a chance at winning now, it’s a big fight just to get on the podium.”
Despite the difficulties, Dalla Lana still thinks the Belgian track suits his car well.
“The car should do well here, it is a good high speed car. At sectors one and three, we should be pretty strong, I think we get back a lot on the middle.”
