ART's Nikita Mazepin has been promoted to pole position for the Azerbaijan sprint race after Luca Ghiotto was handed a post-race penalty for colliding with Sergio Sette Camara during a safety car restart.

The Italian driver was given a five-second penalty after the feature race after colliding with DAMS' Sergio Sette Camara during a safety car restart, sending the Brazilian crashing into the wall and out of the race.

Race stewards deemed the UNI Virtuosi driver to have not held his place in the pack which led to the collision.

Despite finishing in sixth place, Ghiotto's penalty has subsequently dropped him to ninth-place which promotes Sean Gelael into sixth, Juan Manuel Correa into seventh and Nikita Mazepin to eighth, thereby inheriting the pole position for the sprint race.

After finishing the feature race in P5 and securing his first points of the season, he will start Sunday's race from sixth place.

The Formula 2 sprint race will start at 13:10 local time.
