Ott Tanak topped the opening stage of Rally Argentina on the streets of rainy Carlos Paz, setting a time 1.6 seconds faster than championship leader Sebastien Ogier.
Toyota’s Tanak had a clean run around the 1.9 kilometre special stage despite the standing water to lead the event going into the first full day of action.
Kris Meeke was third fastest on one of his favourite events, ahead of the leading Hyundai of Andreas Mikkelsen.
His team-mates Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo sit in fifth and sixth, in front of Jari-Matti Latvala for whom Argentina will mark his 200th World Rally Championship event.
Latvala shared the stage with a friendly Argentinian dog, but managed to avoid the canine with his Yaris to complete a clean run.
Esapekka Lappi was eighth fastest, two tenths of a second quicker than star of Rally Corsica Elfyn Evans.
Completing the top 10 was Teemu Suninen who recovered quickly from a spin on the slippery asphalt without losing too much time.
