Ducati’s aero devices placed under investigation

Qatar Grand Prix winners Ducati have been placed under investigation by MotoGP race control, after four teams lodged a complaint against one of its aerodynamic devices.

Ducati introduced a spoiler extending from the swingarm of the GP19 during winter testing, with Danilo Petrucci running with it throughout the entire Qatar weekend, while race winner Andrea Dovizioso had it fitted on Sunday.

Following Dovizioso's second-successive Qatar win, which he beat Honda's Marc Marquez for by just 0.023 seconds, four manufacturers have made an official complaint against the legality of the device.

Aprilia, Honda, KTM and Suzuki raised the issue with Race Direction, who has requested the devices to be submitted for inspection.

The device was originally thought to have been legal, as it is connected to the swingarm rather than protruding from the fairing.

It is not clear what the device's explicit purpose is, though the fact Petrucci has worked closely with it this year suggests it helps with cooling the rear tyre – a common issue for the Italian in recent years due to his height.

While Dovizioso proved victorious under the floodlights at Losail, Petrucci faded to sixth late on having featured in the leading group.

Fellow GP19 runner Jack Miller on the Pramac-run machine was forced to park up early due to excessive front tyre wear caused by a change of riding style he was forced into using, after the foam padding on his seat unit detached.
