James Davison will drive for Dale Coyne Racing at this year's Indianapolis 500. The Australian, piloting the number 33 car, will be aiming for his fifth Indy 500 start.

The 32-year-old was last in action at the Brickyard in 2017, being called up as a late substitute after Sebastien Bourdais’ horrific qualifying crash which sidelined the French driver for several months.

His 2019 entry will be the third car for DCR, running alongside team-mates Bourdais in the number 18 and Indy 500 rookie Santino Ferrucci in the number 19 car.

“I’m enraptured to be rejoining Dale Coyne Racing with Byrd Hollinger Belardi,” said Davison. “Dale’s team is special in many ways and I have fond memories driving the #18 and #19 cars at the 500 in the past. We endeavour to recreate our prior success together and can’t wait to get after it.”

Davison’s drive is being backed by Jonathan Byrd’s Racing, Hollinger MotorSport, and Belardi Auto Racing. The three racing organisations have all had some level of Indianapolis involvement before, although this is the first time they have collaborated on a single entry.

“We’re all connected in one way or another,” said David Byrd, one of the principals of Jonathan Byrd’s Racing.

“Both the Byrd family and James have a history with Dale and his team and last year James, Brad (Hollinger) and I partnered with Belardi Auto Racing, so this year’s deal came together very naturally. Dale’s team has had strong runs at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the last couple of years and we hope to continue that with them.”
