Ferrari identifies cause of Sebastian Vettel’s Wednesday test crash

Ferrari has identified what they believe was the cause of Sebastian Vettel's heavy crash during pre-season Formula 1 testing on Wednesday.

The four-time champion was on a push lap when he went straight on at Turn 3 and into the barrier, causing front-end damage to the SF90 and a lengthy red flag as the marshals had to complete repairs to the wall.

Whilst Vettel was unhurt in the crash, he was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks after his G-meter was activated.

The cause of the crash was blamed on a mechanical failure, but with the exact reason unknown, Ferrari opted not to send Charles Leclerc out in the car during Wednesday's afternoon running until the final hour, with the Monegasque driver completing just a single lap.

On Thursday, Ferrari said they had identified damage to a wheel rim as the cause.

"After thorough checks we found that Seb’s off yesterday was due to a rim issue. The rim had been damaged a few seconds before by an impact with a foreign object."

The team didn't confirm where the believed the 'foreign object' came from.

Leclerc is back in the car on Thursday for the penultimate test day and his running has so far been uncompromised by the crash.
