Being the son of F1’s greatest can be difficult – Mick Schumacher

Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher, says it's sometimes difficult being in his father's shadow as he looks to build his own motorsport career.

The 19-year-old will step up to Formula 2 for 2019 having won the FIA's F3 European Championship last year and recently signed a deal to join Ferrari's Driver Academy.

However growing up as the son of Michael Schumacher, who Mick described as "the greatest F1 racer of all time", hasn't necessarily made his path to motorsport easy, though he admits it has both upsides and downsides.

"Racing and karting is quite a normal thing in my family and I always loved to go karting with my father," he told the FIA's AUTO Magazine.

"It was big fun sharing that with him, and I remember him asking one day if this would be a hobby for me or if I wanted to do it professionally. I told him straight away I wanted to do it professionally. I never wanted to do anything else.

"I am happy to be the son of the greatest F1 racer of all time. I’m happy that he is the greatest F1 racer of all time, and I admire him for that. And even if sometimes it can be a bit difficult, it is what it is.

"There are good sides to it and there are bad sides. Having the support I have from a lot of people all over the world can’t be a bad thing. I am thankful for that."

Schumacher insists he won't be rushing to climb into an F1 car given the media attention surrounding him, and will continue to take things at his own pace in F2 this year – a plan which has so far proven successful.

"Everybody has to find out for himself what’s best for him. We always said that we wanted to take time for me to develop as a racing driver in the best possible way and we were good in doing it the way we did."

He added: "I am very eager to learn more, improve my skills both in driving the [F2] car but also in working with the team and I am really looking forward to that new adventure."

Seven-time World Champion Michael, 50, has not been seen in public since he sustained serious injuries in a skiing accident in December 2013.
