Repsol Honda has confirmed that Jorge Lorenzo is to undergo surgery after sustaining a fracture in his left wrist while training this weekend.
Italian publication Corriere del Veneto revealed that Lorenzo had visited hospital in Verona on Saturday complaining of pain in his left hand.
He was discharged after two hours but was set for further checks on Monday.
Lorenzo’s Repsol Honda team has now confirmed that he sustained a fracture to his left scaphoid and it will be operated upon tomorrow (Monday), once further checks have been completed.
Lorenzo is due to make his first public appearance as a Honda rider during Wednesday’s 2019 team launch at title sponsor Repsol’s headquarters in Madrid.
The first pre-season test takes place in Malaysia on February 6 ahead of the opening event of the campaign in Qatar the following month.
Lorenzo suffered an injury-affected second half to 2018 after sustaining a broken wrist during a heavy fall in Thailand, which came shortly after a foot fracture in Aragon, bringing his two-year chapter with Ducati to a low-key conclusion.
Lorenzo’s new team-mate Marc Marquez has also endured a winter of recovery after he underwent surgery on the left shoulder that gave him problems through his title-winning 2018 campaign.
