Ad Diriyah FP2 delayed and shortened due to rain

Following the cancellation of free practice one, running at Formula E's opening race weekend of the season continues to be delayed, with poor weather conditions prevailing.

FP2 was scheduled to take place at 08:35 am, lengthened by 30 minutes to compensate for the cancellation of FP1 that was supposed to be 45-minutes long.

However the rain continued as FP2 approached resulting in it being delayed by more than an hour and therefore shortened to just 35-minutes.

It means the 22 drivers will get just one shortened practice session on the brand-new circuit, located on the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ad Diriyah in Riyadh, before qualifying commences shortly after.

As a result of the cancellation of FP1 and the delay to FP2, a number of ideas are currently under consideration for qualifying, with reigning Formula E champion and DS Techeetah driver Jean-Eric Vergne proposing a session conducted in the same format as a practice session.

If supported, this would see Formula E's traditional group qualifying format ditched for the weekend, handing all 22 drivers on the grid an equal opportunity to have a shot at pole position, with the running of the group format favouring those in Group Four due to the ever-improving track conditions.

Update: As a result of the cancellation of FP1 and delay to FP2, a 35-minute free practice session will take place before qualifying, with the session starting at 10:15 am local time. Qualifying has been pushed back and will now feature just two group stages, rather than four.
