2016 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Neel Jani has been named as Porsche's first driver ahead of its entry to the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in Season Six.

Jani, 34, has two Formula E race starts to his name, appearing at the opening round of the Season Four campaign for Dragon Racing before swiftly leaving the American outfit, being replaced by Jose Maria Lopez.

“I’m very much looking forward to the new task,” said Jani.

“Being part of an entirely new Porsche Motorsport programme for the second time, right from the beginning, means a lot to me.

“The technical and driving challenges are huge and our strong Formula E opponents have a significant advantage in experience. There is a lot of work ahead of us and I can’t wait for the roll-out.”

Following Porsche's departure from the World Endurance Championship in 2017, Jani has been driving for Rebellion Racing alongside DS Techeetah's Andre Lotterer and former Mahindra Racing driver Bruno Senna, so far securing a pair of podium finishes at Silverstone and Fuji in the 2018/19 super season.

“Without doubt, Neel is the right man for our new technologically trendsetting program,” added Fritz Enzinger, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport.

“Not only does he contribute speed, but he has a huge amount of single seater experience. He has already driven in Formula E and is well established in Weissach as a development driver.”

Before Porsche's arrival in Season Six, Formula E's current campaign is set to commence this weekend with the inaugural Ad Diriyah E-Prix in Saudi Arabia.
