Super Formula gets boost as Super Licence points tweaked

The FIA has confirmed the Super Licence points that will be available for each championship in 2019, with Super Formula receiving an upgrade.

Drivers must have a valid Super Licence in order to compete in Formula 1 and youngsters wishing to make the grade must have amassed 40 points within the previous three years.

Formula 2 and IndyCar remain the only two series which offer 40 points in one hit – with the leading trio in the secondary category and the champion in the US single-seater series receiving 40 points.

The new-for-2019 FIA Formula 3 championship will award the same points allocation as European Formula 3, which represents an increase on its effective predecessor GP3.

The F3 champion will receive 30 points, while the rebranded European Formula Masters – the series won by Mick Schumacher under the European F3 guise – will award 25 points for its champion.

The Japan-based Super Formula championship has had its allocation enhanced, with the champion now set to receive 25 points rather than 20, with increases for the top six.

The DTM champion will now receive 20 points as opposed to 15, with incremental increases made for the entire top nine.

Formula Renault Eurocup champions, along with Asian and American F3 Regional champions – certified by the FIA – will be in receipt of 18 points.

An amendment was also added to “reduce the maximum number of championships in which a driver can accumulate points in a single calendar year from two to one.”

Some young drivers in recent years have accumulated points by competing in multiple Formula 4 championships – typically ADAC Formel 4 and Italian Formula 4.

All three rookies on the 2019 Formula 1 grid comfortably exceeded the 40 points needed to graduate.

Lando Norris scored 87 points across a three-year period, George Russell picked up 85, while Alexander Albon racked up 63.
