Bike racers are on another level – Lewis Hamilton

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton says bike racers “are on another level” in an Instagram post following his Jerez test aboard a Yamaha Superbike.

Hamilton took to the Jerez circuit on Saturday on a YZF-R1 specially prepared by Yamaha's Crescent-run World Superbike squad, running an all-black livery and on Bridgestone instead of the Pirellis used in WSBK.

He was joined by fellow Briton, former British Superbike champion and WSBK race winner at Brno this year, Alex Lowes, who acted as rider coach and rode on track on his race-spec R1. Lowes' teammate Michael van der Mark was also present.

Hamilton did suffer a small crash during his track day, but only the bike was damaged, and he was soon back out on his second R1.

In a brief Instagram post, Hamilton reaffirmed his life-long love of bikes, before stating he “needs” an invite to seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi's ranch in Tavullia.

“Woke up feeling great today,” the post began. “Miss riding the Superbike already. FYI I’ve always loved two wheels more than four.

“Always wanted a motorbike since I was a kid however I am super grateful my dad got me a kart. But current new love is out on track on my bike.

“I have the highest regard and respect for these motorbike riders. It’s a much different discipline however [it] requires some of the same basics such as time, patience, fearlessness, focus, agility and risk taking – all of which make a sport exciting.

“And yes, I’d love to race bikes. But these guys are on another level so I think I’ll just enjoy riding and testing the limits on track.

“Valentino Rossi, I need to come to the ranch asap.”

Posting on Sunday on Twitter, Crescent team boss Paul Denning said of Hamilton: “This bloke can really ride.

“Talent for days and a proper good lad. Thanks to the Crescent and Pata Yamaha WSBK crew for building such a cool R1."

Lowes added on Instagram: "Fastest man in the world on four wheels, and not too far behind on two. Enjoyed being out on track together."
