Sophia Floersch has been allowed to fly home after recovering from a spine operation due to her horrific shunt during the 65th running of the Macau Grand Prix.

The 17-year old had recently undergone surgery to remove a piece of broken bone near her spinal cord and to repair the fracture itself, taking nearly nine hours to complete.

Floersch's accident came as a result of hitting the back of Jehan Daruvala on the fast run down to the famous Lisboa corner before an erroneous yellow flag was shown on the circuit.

Daruvala had slowed for the caution flag and Floersch was caught out, hitting the back of the Indian driver and left her with no ability to slow down whilst still travelling at over 170mph.

As she slid towards Lisboa, her car had veered towards the barrier and then subsequently a new sausage kerb which had been installed for the 2018 event, launching her into the air.

As her car got airbourne, she hit the side of All-Japan F3 champion Sho Tsuboi before going through the catch-fencing and into the front of the photographer's tower on the inside of the circuit.

She updated her fans in a social media message and was keen to show her focus is now on plans for the 2019 season.

Today I am flying back home. Really happy to see all my family and friends in the next days again, said Floersch.

"I am still overwhelmed by all the support I got from you fans all around the world.  A big thank you goes to all people in Macau especially the guys in the hospital, Dr. Lau, Dr. Chan, Mr. Lei Wai Seng, Maria Elisa Goncalves, angel Sulanir Goncalves Pacheco and all of the wonderful nurses.

"The complete Macau GP organisation, Patrick, Dr. Ceccarelli, HWA and Mercedes did a perfect job just by helping so friendly in every kind of way.

"Now a new chapter starts and I can’t wait for it to begin. Let’s focus on 2019."
