Sophia Floersch has been diagnosed with a spinal fracture following a horror crash during the opening laps of the 2018 Macau Grand Prix.

The Van Amersfoort Racing driver had been involved in an incident on the long straight heading into the tight Lisboa Bend and consequently arrived at the corner backwards. She clipped the rear of Sho Tsuboi's TOM'S car which launched her car into the air, clearing the catch fencing and striking a temporary structure.

Her car then dropped to the ground where marshals and photographers were standing. A statement from the circuit confirmed that along with Floersch and Tsuboi, two photographers and a marshal were also hospitalised.

All five were were transferred to Conde S. Januario General Hospital.

Floersch was "conscious and talking" according to a statement, though a medical report has confirmed the 17-year-old has been diagnosed with a spinal fracture.

The injured marshal suffered a laceration to his face and a broken jaw, but is otherwise fine. One photographer is confirmed to have suffered a concussion and the other a liver laceration. All remain under observation.

The race was red-flagged as a result of the crash but later restarted following a lengthy delay. Daniel Ticktum went on to claim a dominant victory.
