Jorge Lorenzo says he will take a decision on his continued participation in this weekend's MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix before FP3, after struggling on Friday with his fractured wrist.
Lorenzo suffered a fractured left wrist in a heavy highside crash during FP2 in Thailand, and has not raced since.
The Ducati rider had surgery on his wrist nine days ago and was passed fit to ride at Sepang on Thursday, though was unsure how far into the weekend he would make it as he had not done any training with the wrist since the operation.
Lorenzo completed 21 laps across both of Friday's 45-minute sessions and was last in both, with his best time of 2:02.204s coming in FP1, putting him just under three seconds off the pace.
He says he will “see what we can do” in the Clinica Mobile tonight, and will decide on Saturday morning if he will continue or hand over his GP18s to test rider Michele Pirro.
“Let's see what we can do and if the Clinica Mobile can help me to be better tomorrow, with hours of resting in bed,” he said.
“If you can win a race, get a podium or top 10, then it makes sense to take a risk. If you push and you can only go three seconds slower than the fastest one, it doesn't make much sense [to continue].
“Tomorrow we'll make the decision of whether to go ahead or give the bike to Michele Pirro.”
Adding to his comments, Lorenzo says he is “frustrated” as he hoped to be in a “better condition” for this weekend, while admitting the various changes Ducati made to the bike on Friday did nothing to help him.
“It was difficult, I'm disappointed and frustrated because I wanted to be here in a better condition,” he said.
“The pain I feel is normal because this kind of injury needs three weeks of mobility and I just took the cast off two days ago, seven days after the operation.
“So it's normal to have this kind of pain and discomfort. Like this is very difficult to be competitive.
“I tried to push, but even if I push I can only go three or four seconds slower than the fastest one. Nothing on the bike has helped, just painkillers and anti-inflammatories."
