Fernando Alonso ‘annoyed’ that FOM pick on his team radio

Fernando Alonso says he finds it "quite annoying" that he is frequently picked on for team radio broadcasts that he said were intended to be "private".

Formula One Management (FOM) have access to all driver and team radio broadcasts and can choose to air them if they wish, but Alonso believes he is unfairly picked on after one of his messages to the team was aired during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

McLaren asked Alonso if he wanted new intermediate tyres, or full wet weather tyres, to which he replied: "I think we should go to the garage." His engineer was then heard saying they have one more attempt to get higher than his current position of 11th. Alonso replied: "Even if we put on a rocket ship we will not beat P11."

Speaking after the session Alonso said it was "annoying" that his radio messages were chosen over others.

"FOM is already quite annoying with my radio, I don’t know what problem they have to put always put my radio on, I don’t know what was, let’s say, not normal about that conversation.

"When the track is getting worse and you cannot improve your lap times, you chat about which tyres to put on and if it’s worth doing another run or not. It’s their favourite hobby, so good luck to them."

Alonso was however pleased with McLaren's result on Saturday and says it was down to the mixed weather.

"The rain sort of saved us, allowing us a good starting position, and we know qualifying is worth 90 per cent of the final result because here it’s so difficult to overtake, we tend to run like a train.

"So, starting so close to the points, with a good start tomorrow I think we have good chances to get into the points. Without the rain today that chance would have never come."
