Antonio Giovinazzi gets nod for Ferrari in-season F1 test

Antonio Giovinazzi will have another run out for Ferrari next week during post-race Formula 1 testing in Hungary.

Giovinazzi, in his role as reserve driver for Ferrari and Sauber, completed running for both teams in Spain, a situation that will be replicated on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Giovinazzi fulfils the requirement for teams to run a young driver – classed as someone with two or fewer Grands Prix starts – for two of the four in-season test days.

The Italian was in action at the Hungaroring on Friday morning for his second of six planned FP1 runs with Sauber this year, and wound up 18th on the leaderboard.

“It’s really important to have a progressive programme to just take the feeling of the car,” said Giovinazzi, who admitted his infrequent activity in 2018 is “not easy”.

“It was really good to come back from Hockenheim to here but now I need to wait another four days to jump in, then will be another distance to the test, so it’s not really easy but it’s what I have and what I need to do.”

When asked by Motorsport Week whether he felt his FP1 runs were an audition for a 2019 seat, should a vacancy arise, he said: “I think I have four more FP1s.

“I need to just do my best, my target for next year is to be on the grid, to drive, this is still my target.

“But I need to do everything well now and I hope for next year I can have my opportunity.”
