Sauber hands Antonio Giovinazzi Hungary FP1 and test outing

Sauber reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi will return to C37 during practice for this weekend’s Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Giovinazzi’s run is his second of six planned practice outings in his role as reserve driver, a position he also holds at Ferrari.

Having replaced Marcus Ericsson during the opening practice session at Hockenheim, Giovinazzi will take over Charles Leclerc’s cockpit for the 90-minute running on Friday.

Giovinazzi also participated in FP1 in Hungary 12 months ago – though brought his session to a premature halt when he crashed Haas’ VF-17.

The Italian, runner-up in the 2016 GP2 Series, is a contender for a 2019 seat with Sauber, should Leclerc move on from the team.

Giovinazzi will also carry out testing duties for Sauber next Wednesday at the post-race gathering, with Ericsson tasked with piloting the C37 on Tuesday’s opening day.

Formula 1 teams must allocate two of their four in-season test days to young drivers, classified as someone with two or fewer Grand Prix starts, for which Giovinazzi marginally qualifies.

Giovinazzi started two races as a substitute for Pascal Wehrlein in Australia and China last year.
