Lewis Hamilton is set to start from 14th on the grid at Formula 1's German Grand Prix after suffering a hydraulic failure during Q1 at Hockenheim.

Hamilton slowed in the closing stages of Q1 and was told to halt his Mercedes W09, which he did at the exit of Turn 10.

Hamilton briefly tried to push his car back to the pit lane but ultimately abandoned such a tactic, and crouched disconsolately beside his stricken W09 after it was wheeled into a safe place by marshals.

The stoppage came moments after Hamilton ran wide through Turn 1, briefly catching some air, though it is not yet known if the two incidents are connected.

Hamilton had set a time quick enough to secure safe passage through to Q2 but he was unable to participate in the session after his stoppage.

With Daniel Ricciardo also a non-participant in Q2, due to his impending drop to the back as a result of his engine-related penalty, Hamilton held 14th, though it nonetheless marks a blow for the Briton in his title fight with Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel currently holds an eight point lead over Hamilton in the standings.
